If all goes well, after labor you should be left with some precious chin kits, these however can take a lot of work. When chins are first born they are ready to go, they have a full coat, open eyes and are already running around. It is so important that you have a baby proofed cage on hand.
What to do After Birth:
make sure all babies are clean and dried off, sometimes mom is too tired to dry all the kits off, and this is when you need to step in with a towel and gently rub the babies dry
immediately weigh the kits, and continue weighing them twice a day for a week, and then once a day after that. Healthy babies generally weigh around 40 grams or higher. It is normal for kits to lose about 2 grams the first day, as they are first becoming active and moms milk isn't in yet. They should gain around 2 grams a day after that, sometimes even more! Also their bellies should be warm and hard, not squishy, as it's a sign of fullness
Attempt to sex your new babies, however, this can be tricky at a young age. Just remember, the males have a separation, the females do not. Also, the best give away is the slit you can see on the females cone.
Babies will begin nursing, but will also start tasting pellets and hay at a very young age. While they are eating regular food, most of their nutrition will still comes from nursing, and they should not be separated for at least 8 weeks.
Weaning should begin between 8-10 weeks, but keep in mind its okay to leave a daughter in with mom, or a son in with dad, but do not keep mother and son or dad and daughter together past the 8 weeks point, as inbreeding can occur. |
